One of the cloud's biggest benefits is that you can pay only for what you use. This can help you save costs especially if you don’t need to use cloud resources 100% of the time.
For those of you that need the resources up and running all the time, the PAYG is probably not the best option as it would may become quite expensive.
To overcome this, Microsoft launched, a couple of years ago, a new purchase model that could allow you to reserve instances (and a few other services) for periods of 1 or 3 years. This allowed you to save between 20% to 72% with the instances' costs, but it had a catch: you needed to pay the reservation upfront.
Of course you could cancel the reservation and reuse the investment in other cloud services, but a lot of companies struggle to survive and they don’t really have a lot of money in their pockets to make these kinds of investments.
Fortunately, this has changed. Last week, Microsoft announced a new Reserved Instances purchase model based on monthly payments.
You still need to commit for 1 or 3 years, but you can now choose to pay on a monthly basis instead of upfront.
And what’s even better is that there’s absolutely no difference in the discount you get if you choose monthly or upfront payment. It’s a Win/Win scenario!
